“Yet often the mountain gives itself most completely when I have no
destination, when I reach nowhere in particular, but have gone out
merely to be with the mountain as one visits a friend with no intention
but to be with him.” ― Nan Shepherd, The Living Mountain
I turned 50 last August and decided that life is too short not to
maximise for impact professionally – and prioritise my bucket
list personally (with family first, obviously).
The Abels Project is the realisation of a long held dream.
Studying the history of art in my early 20s I promised myself
I’d quit my job to become an artist when I hit 50.
This seems rather romantic in hindsight, but last year, after my
50th birthday, I left my full-time job in media (sadly not to
become an artist, or at least not primarily).
I have always been inspired by conceptual art, and in
particular by walking/landscape artists such as Hamish Fulton,
Richard Long, Andy Goldsworthy and Marina Abramović.
The Abels Project is an attempt to create art via 158 climbs and
conversations (or at least until my knees give up).
